What is the church?

August 4, 2019 Sermon Preview

The church is not the building. The church is the people. It is still church even when the building is nowhere to be found. (First Christian Church worship in the park, July 7, 2019)

Are you smarter than a third grader?

Prove it.

Answer this: what is the church?

People often say they are “going to church” when they come to worship. This week’s sermon reminds us that church is not a place where we go. It is not something we do. As Christians, it is who we are.

Scripture

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”

–1 Corinthians 12:12 (NRSV)

Sweet Truth #15

Church means, “a group of people called together for a special purpose.” Sometimes, we tend to use the word “church” and think of a building. Our church’s building is a very useful tool to help us worship and serve God, but the church is really the people.

God knows that we can life the Christian life much better when we are in a group of other Christians–ones who will help, love, and encourage us along the way. By ourselves we can become weak, discouraged, or even a little lazy. But together we remind one another about God’s gospel and encourage each other to love Jesus Christ.

The Church is very important, and when you are baptized you become a full-fledged member of God’s special people–the Church!
