Defining our identity: why do we call ourselves Disciples?

Why do we call ourselves Disciples?

The “Are You Smarter than a Third Grader” sermon series demonstrated that it is important to be able to ask questions about our faith. This how we learn more about God’s truth and how to apply the wisdom of Christ in our daily lives.

For the fall preaching series the members of the congregation have been asked to submit their own questions for sermon topics. The first installation in this series is a look at who we are as a denomination. How do we define what it means to be a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Over the next few weeks we will look at our statement of identity which says, “we are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” This video series from the Disciples of Christ helps us frame the questions that we will be asking.

The founders of our movement rejected complicated theological denominational titles. Instead, they chose the simple biblical term, “disciple.”

Why did they choose this title? Why do we continue to use it? What does it mean when we say it?

On Sunday, August 18, these two Bible stories will help us find clues to better answer these questions.
