Are you smarter than a third grader?

Prove it.

Answer this: What is grace?

Our baptismal students can answer this question. Can you?

The sixth sermon in our summer series examines a topic most of us would rather not think about, sin. None of us want to admit it, but the truth is that none of us are perfect. This is a fact we must acknowledge if we are to have an accurate understanding of the state of the world and our place in it.

Scripture

“Their feet rush into sin;
they are swift to shed innocent blood.
They pursue evil schemes;
acts of violence mark their ways.

“The way of peace they do not know;
there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;
no one who walks along them will know peace.”

–Isaiah 59:7-8 (NRSV)

Sweet Truth #6

When we act selfish and unkind, that is sin. Unloving, cruel actions make God very sad. They also harm us and hurt the people around us.

When we sin–against God and other people–then we need forgiveness. In Jesus, we are promised the Lord’s forgiveness, each time we turn back to God and want to do better, in Christ’s great love.

Since we are forgiven by God, we are also commanded to forgive other people too! That is hard to do sometimes, but in God’s grace and love, we can forgive the people who hurt us. We will learn more about forgiveness in sweet truth #10.
