The Lord put a mark on Cain (Genesis 4:1-16)

The second creation story in Genesis reminds us that even when human beings misuse the gifts we have been given, God does not give up on us. The same reality is at work in the story of the first murder in the Bible.

Cain kills his brother Able and is banished as a result. Despite this, God continues to protect Cain. A mark is placed on him that will prevent others from seeking revenge. Christians believe the same thing to be true about baptism. We are sealed into Christ’s covenant and even death cannot prevent us from finding forgiveness and peace.
