Spirituality and existentialism

“You have striven with God and humans.” (Genesis 32:28)

Prayer is not simply presenting a shopping list to God. It is an opportunity to wrestle with the one who made us. Jacob came out changed from his encounter with God. He was given the name Israel, which literally means “the one who struggles with God.”

Our prayer group resumed meeting yesterday. We did exactly what Jacob did. We wrestled with the challenges of our life, sought the direction of the Holy Spirit, and gave thanks for the grace that Christ has given us.

The life of faith is not easy. We do not have to pretend it is. Jesus cried out to his father in garden. Jacob wrestled all night long. If God can handle them, God can handle our struggles as well.
