Missouri Simulator Tour-Kennett to Caruthersville

Previous leg: Dexter to Kennett

The second leg of my Missouri tour took me from Kennett (KTKX) to Caruthersville(M05), the seat of Pemiscot County. It became obvious from the charts that navigation was going to be very easy on this flight. Simply take off, turn to 101°, and land right before crossing the Mississippi River. No fuss. No muss. If only all airports were that easy to find.

Small town America is full of such wonderfully interesting place names. The midpoint of my journey was Hayti. Despite being named after the country in the Caribbean, it is spelled slightly differently and pronounced “Hay-tie.”

Besides passing by on Interstate 55, Caruthersville is a place I have never actually visited in real life. To learn a little more about my virtual destination I visited the local Chamber of Commerce site. Caruthersville was apparently a favorite vacation destination of President Harry Truman. It is also the second county seat of Pemiscot County. The original county seat, Gayoso, washed away down the Mississippi River. Of aviation interest is a T-33 trainer on static display in the local park.

Approaching Caruthersville (M05). The Mississippi River lies right at the edge of town.

It is also home to the only bridge across the Mississippi River between Cairo, Illinois and Memphis, Tennessee. Fortunately I am flying so I do not have to worry about such things. That bridge did make a handy landmark, however.

Flight details: 0.3 hours and 18 NM

Next leg: Caruthersville to New Madrid, Missouri
