Spirituality and existentialism

“I brought you out of slavery.” (Exodus 20:1-2)

Sunday’s sermon begins a study of the Ten Commandments. Sometimes Christians think of these instructions as an attempt to buy God’s favor. Actually, they are an expression of our gratitude for what God has done for us.

The first instruction begins with a reminder of who God is and what God has done for the people. Everything else follows from that reality. The same thing is true for us as Christians. Faith itself is a gift given to us by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit makes Jesus known to us and gives us the grace to seek his forgiveness.

In response, we seek to be made more like Christ each and every day.
