Disco lights at American Legion Post 59

Hosting Dexter’s most special residents

The Dexter American Legion hosts a community dance for special needs adults in conjunction with the Stoddard County ARC. Every two weeks the Post 59 building is filled with some of the most energetic and joy filled individuals imaginable.

While many attendees simply sit at tables and enjoy snacks and sodas, several others dance their hearts out all evening long. A couple of individuals with good singing voices treat us to some impromptu karaoke, and sometimes a few notes on the harmonica accompany the latest country song.

Quite simply, the level of energy in the room is utterly dazzling. ARC clients and group home residents who rarely get a chance to integrate into the community are able to enjoy a night out on the town. In this context they are simply able to kick back, relax, and enjoy themselves in a way that is a pleasure to behold.

Special education was my first career right out of college. Two decades ago many of these individuals would have been my students. Since leaving the classroom I have often wondered whatever became of the kids I taught.

While I will never know the details of my particular students, I like to imagine that many of them ended up as well supported as the special guests we welcome into our building every other Monday night.

For organizations like the Stoddard County ARC, the support staff, and all the people whose live they change I am SOFNGR8FL.

The difference they make is dazzling.
